Join Work Hard Play Hard (WHPH) Collective, a new community-driven event series by Kamilah Evans, MD.

Mission:

To redefine what it means to “balance” work and play for high-achieving professionals and students by creating intentional third spaces that support deep work, genuine connection, and celebration—all under one creative, community-driven umbrella.

The idea for Work Hard, Play Hard(er) Collective was born out of my lived experience — not just as a doctor, but as someone who’s always been searching for that perfect balance between the grind and the joy, the work and the play.

Growing up, my dad — also a doctor — unknowingly shaped this entire vision. His weekly motto, especially during the hardest moments of school or returning from a break, was simple: “Work hard, Play Hard(er).” Over time, that became our family’s lifestyle — get your work done, then live fully. And somewhere along the way, play hard turned into play harder, because, if I’m being honest, the reward felt that much better after the hustle.

That mindset carried me through medical school, residency, and every late-night study session fueled by dreams (and caffeine). But along the way, I realized — it wasn’t just about surviving the work. It was about creating spaces to live in the in-between, spaces where work and play could coexist, where connection happened naturally, not forced at the club or in passing.

One of my most formative memories comes from a Barnes & Noble café during med school — a place that accidentally became a safe haven. It had everything: big tables, real food, a full restaurant vibe, and — the cherry on top — Wine Wednesdays. We’d spend hours grinding through pharmacology or OB, and like clockwork, as the clock struck 5 PM, we transitioned. Out came the half-priced wine, and with it, the real connection. Those study sessions turned into friendships, and those friendships became the foundation of my support system — where our relations grew from study partner to bridesmaids and groomsmen in each other’s weddings.

That space wasn’t just a coffee shop. It was a third place — where work met play, and life happened in the middle. And the more I move through this journey — as a doctor, event curator, creative, and multi-hyphenate — the more I realize we need spaces like that designed for us. Not soulless coworking spaces. Not cold corporate coffee chains. But spaces built for people who grind hard and crave connection, who know that work is necessary, but play is essential.

Work Hard, Play Hard(er) Collective is my way of creating that — a lifestyle brand, a space, a movement that honors the grind and celebrates the play. Because the real flex?

Is knowing how to balance both.
